akihiko sanada
NAME: Akihiko Sanada.
AGE: 18. 22nd September.
CANON: Persona 3 Reload.
CANON POINT: January 31st. Near the top of Tartarus.
CRAU: N/A.
OTHER: Nothing comes to mind.

SUITABILITY:

Akihiko is 18 years old during the events he is taken from, and despite being the most stubborn of the SEES team he'd be able to manage at the resort after a while of settling in. The setting is something that would challenge Akihiko on a level he's never experienced before, and would be a bigger learning curve for him than the one he has during the events of Persona 3 reload.

He has not had time in his life to experience the joys of being an eighteen year old, or to forge connections with others outside of the SEES bubble. The resort will offer not only the opportunity to have those connections, but to live life outside of being a Persona User and having the end of days hanging over his head. This is the person who went to the beach and wasn't even sure what to do. Wearing swimming trunks? Hanging out? Trying to hit on girls? What is that all about? The resort will be an eye opener in more ways than one for him, and he'll be determined to get through whatever it throws at him once intimacy is a thing. With any luck he'll manage to understand what life is without having to summon a giant monster to take out other monsters during an hour that doesn't exist anywhere else....

And there's always plenty of places for him to go on his morning jog! Other people to train with and to learn from!

HISTORY:

Akihiko Sanada is an 18-year-old student at Gekkoukan High, the captain of the boxing team, and considered popular (even though he doesn't appreciate the attention when he notices it). He is also a member of SEES (Specialised Extracurricular Execution Squad), a group formed to deal with the Dark Hour, a hidden hour at midnight when ordinary people are placed in coffins and unaware of the monsters called Shadows that roam freely.

At a young age, Akihiko and his sister Miki lose their parents and end up in an orphanage where he meets Shinjiro Aragaki. Things could be considered normal, but a fire at the orphanage later claims Miki's life, prompting Akihiko to vow to become stronger to protect those he loves and it isn't until he's at school and approached by Mitsuru Kirijo that he gets to truly prove that to himself. Akihiko becomes involved in joining SEES with Shinji and awakening his Persona before the game's events. During a mission Shinji's Persona becomes uncontrollable and kills an innocent person, leading to Shinji leaving SEES and school. Despite it being a tragic incident, Akihiko sees it as motivation to grow stronger still.

At the game's start Akihiko is side-lined due to an injury, which he protests against frequently and openly. He supports the team but cannot fight until after the first major shadow is defeated and once he recovers, he joins the team in exploring Tartarus as well as facing increasingly powerful shadows that show up each month. He also spends time trying to persuade his friend Shinji to return not only to school but to SEES as his friend had previously left both prior.

As the story unfolds, the team learns that the Kirijo Group conducted unethical experiments to explore the collective unconscious which led to the emergence of Nyx, an entity that threatens to bring about the Fall and erase all life. There's also the group Strega, Persona users who are doing everything they can to bring about the Fall and try to derail the SEES team's work. If that isn't bad enough, on October 4th, Shinji is shot while protecting a teammate, leaving Akihiko in denial trying to deal with the loss until he realizes Shinji would want him to continue fighting and trying to protect others. By accepting this, Akihiko is actually one of the first to awaken their true Persona, Caesar.

The team then faces a choice: to kill Ryoji (a team member who is actually the shadow of death, apparently) and forget everything and walking into oblivion without a clue, or to ascend Tartarus and confront Nyx head on. They choose the latter, determined to defeat the cosmic entity and fulfil their promise to graduate together.

ABILITIES:

((cw: suicidal imagery for this section))

Akihiko is one of the Persona crew which means he has the ability to summon a manifestation of his psyche. This in turn allows Akihiko to fight, most notably against Shadows during the dark hour. His Persona is summoned by shooting himself in the head with a custom gun known as an Evoker. Naturally he won't have his Evoker to begin with in the resort, so summoning his persona is a no-go. Whilst it is somewhat possible to summon them without, it isn't something Akihiko has done or trained for.

His Persona is called Caesar, and most of the skills revolve around electric (zio) based attacks, meaning that Akihiko is susceptible to ice based attacks. The full spell list is HERE.

Outside of his Persona, Akihiko is in the boxing club and is very good at it, he also makes sure to keep his fitness levels up.

VICES:

Stubbornness.

Akihiko can out-stubborn anyone when it comes down to it, headstrong and often set in his ways. When he thinks he's right Aki will often refuse to listen to others' advice even when it may benefit him, and as a result can push himself too hard. He's got this, he can handle it! Even when injured he has to constantly be reminded by Mitsuru that no, he's not well enough to fight, and no he cannot join the battle until he's healed. That doesn't stop Akihiko from talking about trying! His stubbornness brings out a competitive streak that just can't be tamed.

Even his friend Shinjiro didn't get to escape the stubbornness that Akihiko wields so proficiently. Even though his friend doesn't want to be in the team or be in school, Akihiko refuses to give up and will seek out his friend to keep bringing it up. He even talks about when he'll bring Shinji back, not if.

Often this stubborn streak can result in arguments or times where Akihiko can get himself in more trouble through way of just not listening, or believing he has the right of it. He's more set on proving his strength than anything, and would probably be on the list of "most likely to be eaten by a giant shadow".

Lack of emotions, obliviousness.

Akihiko tends to take things very seriously and has often admitted in social link events that he has trouble opening up emotionally. He's aware of it but isn't aware on how to truly fix it. Due to this he can come across as distant or cold even to those who know him and care for him. It isn't intentional, it's just how Akihiko is. When at school he's often followed by a group of fangirls and the only thing he has to say about it is their voices give him a headache. They have names? He doesn't know them. They aren't a part of his training or the missions, so there's little point in bothering there. Girls? Boys? Who has time for that when there's monsters to fight and towers to climb? Even in one of the drama cds when at the beach trying to be "normal", Akihiko comes dressed in a full wetsuit style outfit, claiming that athletes have broken records in them and unaware of just how out of place he looks. And that's after some girls laugh at him for it.

Events at the resort will definitely catch him off guard at first. His world view can be very black and white, with Akihiko being unable to comprehend the emotional aspects or nuances in certain situations. His view of things can also be quite black and white too, with Akihiko unable to think too hard on the emotional aspect of things and motivations to begin with.

Impatience.

This guy is impatient in many aspects, especially with others who don't meet standards or with people he feels aren't being serious enough. This has come up before with the team and has occasionally created friction. At one point he even snaps at his teammate Junpei when he felt the other wasn't taking things seriously and was potentially risking the mission they were on.

If there's a big monster around then Akihiko is the first to jump up and try to fight it, and if he can't he will make this thoughts known as to why they should be dealing with it sooner rather than later. Despite him giving others grief for not being serious, it is most likely Akihiko's impatience that would get them into trouble when it comes to risk if Mitsuru wasn't there to rein him in. He is not a patient person when others are in danger though, and it is this which will allow the resort to play him like a fiddle.

A perfect example of Akihiko's impatience occurs at the start of the game; he's injured his ribs and cannot fight, and all he could talk about is getting back to the fighting. He goes on and on about it, chomping at the bit despite knowing full well the answer will remain the same, that he's to wait until healed before diving back in.

VIRTUES:

Determination.

Akihiko is fiercely determined both as a fighter and a person. He is always pushing himself in an effort to become stronger in order to protect those closest to him. Having lost his parents and his sisters, not to mention his friend Shinji, it's only natural that Akihiko wants to ensure it doesn't happen to others and that he'll be strong enough to prevent it. Should something occur that does get him down it is always short lived as Aki is determined to never give up where he can help it. When his friend Shinji died, it took a time for Akihiko to get through it, but he manages to not let the grief stop him in the end and simply channels it into becoming stronger to protect the team.

Throughout the game Akihiko can be seen training or constantly working to better himself. Even cooking isn't safe as he's determined to follow a bodybuilding regime. Boiled chicken and broccoli anyone? Everything can be made a challenge if someone tries hard enough! Doing homework with Mitsuru? He'll do squats over his chair at the same time, getting a workout both physically and mentally! Running from a gang? Make it a race with the others, see who wins!

All in all, this means that the house can easily tap into this to get Akihiko to do what it wants. Whilst he can recognise when a game is being played, if refusing to play along puts others at risk and is seen as losing then he knows what he needs to do. However, this can be backhanded where Akihiko may refuse to do something in order to not let the house win.

Loyalty.

Loyalty comes naturally to Akihiko; he is deeply loyal to SEES and the people he cares most about. Often he's a pillar of support for the team, never hesitating to back them up in battle or even emotionally. Akihiko is one of the first to cheer the protagonist on, even when it's a fight they can't really win against a life destroying cosmic entity. As a senior member of SEES, Akihiko takes his responsibilities very seriously when it comes to the team, even to the point of not letting the others go to Tartarus unless Mitsuru or himself are there. Akihiko follows the rules that Mitsuru sets, even to the point of making sure his schoolwork is done when midterms begin. There's a sense of duty towards the team and nothing can shake it. This guy even goes on to honour his friend's dying request to look after Ken no matter the circumstances that led to it.

Often Akihiko can be seen showing up to support the others in combat, even when he's unable to fight he'll be giving advice. His loyalty is unshakeable, even when the darker things come out or when things are looking grim. At one point later, when asked if he would choose the present or the past, Akihiko chooses the present even though it means the dead stay dead. He's loyal to the protagonist and the sacrifice they made and knows that bringing them back to life would undo any meaning it had.

Which, once again means the house can really get him good and compliant by threatening his friends and teammates.

Courage.

Akihiko never hesitates to face danger head-on. Whether he's fighting shadows during the dark hour in Tartarus, or confronting difficult truths, Akihiko always makes sure to keep a brave face on. If he crumbled, the chances are the team would too if they saw it happen.

In a way this one could almost be considered a vice as well, as Akihiko is always the first to rush into the fight and take on the battle. Even when the shadows are larger than they should be all he can do is be impressed and want to take it down. The courage works in both ways; sometimes it's great and sometimes it doesn't work out so well. Often times it's the former, and the courage feeds in to the loyalty and determination that comes through when looking out for those around him.
